Prior to the intervention of the Delian Expedition, the tyrannical Olympian empire were the dominant military and political force in the Delian galaxy for three thousand years.
Appearance: The Olympian 'gods' are human in appearance, though it is unclear if they are humans, somehow related to the Ancients, or if this is simply a form they have taken for convenience. They possess super-human powers (strength, mind control, weather control) which parallel those mentioned in Earth mythology. The source of these powers was found to be the strange Ambrosia device located on Olympia, which when destroyed, rendered the Olympians powerless.
Organisation: The twelve most senior Olympians charged with running the various aspects of the empire were: Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Hermes and Hestia. Minor 'gods' such as Hades and Dionysus were known to exist.
The military might of the empire consisted of the Hand of Ares, the Olympian ground forces made up of Hoplite warriors, and the Hand of Athena, their space fleet. While Olympian loyalists were installed as planetary leaders, worlds considered loyal to the empire were essentially left to their own devices so long as they provide a steady flow of produce and soldiers for the empire. The 'gods' regularly toured these worlds, and were known to occupy them for extended periods of time.
History: The Olympians rose to power around 5000 BC, and after raising an army on their home world of Olympia, began to conquer the Delian Galaxy. By 1600 BC they had developed hyperdrive technology and came to Earth, taking residence in Greece as allies of the Goa'uld and creating the ancient Greek religion using stories from their home galaxy as the basis of the mythology.
The Ancients, who were closely monitoring the Olympians, slowly grew suspicious of them and established a presence in the region. In 1180 BC, sensing the growing hostilities, the Olympians used their influence to mobilise a massive Greek army to sail across the Aegean and destroy the nearby Ancient outpost, an event chronicled by the poet Homer as The Battle of Troy. The ongoing conflict plunged the region into chaos and brought about what modern archaeologist term the Greek Dark Ages.
At some point prior to 800 BC the Ancients were able to overthrow the Olympians and drive them back into their home galaxy, deploying the a city-ship (the Lost City of Akrotiri) to monitor the Delian Galaxy and warn of any future signs that the Olympians were planned to again occupy Earth. The Delian Expedition would later come to occupy this city-ship as their base of operations during the third year of the Delian Expedition.
Following their defeat on Earth the Olympians consolidated their power base and became the dominant ruling force of the Delian Galaxy. In July 2005 they were encountered by the Delian Expedition, who would go on to war with them until their eventual defeat in July 2008.
Current status: The death of the senior leadership at the Battle of Olympia severely damaged the Olympians empire. While they were now free from tyranny, the followers of the Olympians struggled to rebuild their civilisation, and civil wars have plagued them for almost a decade. Prior to Hades, none of the minor gods have been successful in reuniting the forces of the empire under their name.
